Ross

The most beautiful historic town in Tasmania.

Located 120 km north of Hobart and 80 km south of Launceston and sits 186 metres above sea level. Whilst Ross is located just under 2 km off the Midland Highway (the main route between Hobart and Launceston), this picturesque historic town retains significant examples of colonial era architecture and convict history enveloping visitors in with its sleepy character charms.

Throughout the nineteenth century Ross was an important stopover point between Launceston and Hobart. As such it was a horse coach changing point, a town for the local garrison and an important destination for produce from the surrounding farms.

Today it is arguably the finest nineteenth century village in Australia. It has a tree-lined main street, the beautiful bridge and river, and the location of the Wesleyan Church at the top of the slight hill, combine to give it a remarkable aesthetic beauty and tranquility.
